Biography

Rhys ap Gruffudd (around 1132–28 April 1197) ruled the kingdom of Deheubarth in southern Wales from 1155 to 1197. Known later as The Lord Rhys (Yr Arglwydd Rhys), he used titles like Proprietary Prince of Deheubarth, Prince of South Wales, and sometimes Prince of Wales or Prince of the Welsh. The title 'prince' came from the Latin word 'princeps,' meaning chief leader, reflecting Rhys's claim to be the main ruler of Wales.

Rhys gained power after a period when the Normans dominated, starting with the death of his grandfather Rhys ap Tewdwr, who was killed at Brecon in 1093 by Bernard de Neufmarché. After this, most of Deheubarth came under Norman control. His father, Gruffudd ap Rhys, was left with just a small part of the kingdom, and Rhys's older brothers gradually regained more land before Rhys took full control in 1155.

The early years of Rhys's reign were filled with conflict with King Henry II of England. In 1158, Rhys had to submit to Henry's authority, and in 1163, Henry invaded Deheubarth, took Rhys's lands, and imprisoned him. Even though he was released within weeks with some lands returned, Rhys's situation was unstable. He formed an alliance with Owain Gwynedd, and after Henry's failed invasion of Wales in 1165, Rhys regained most of his territories.

In 1171, Rhys made peace with King Henry II. He was confirmed in his conquests and appointed Justiciar of South Wales, allowing him to keep some independence while recognizing English control. He maintained good relations with Henry until the king died in 1189, after which Rhys rebelled against Richard I. After the death of Owain Gwynedd in 1170, Rhys emerged as a leading power in Wales, becoming one of the most successful Welsh rulers of his time. He married Gwenllian ferch Madog ap Maredudd ap Bleddyn, strengthening political ties through the marriage.

Before Fame

Rhys ap Gruffudd was born into a royal family at a time when they were struggling against Norman conquest and expansion into Wales. His early life was marked by the dramatic decline of his family's fortunes after his grandfather died in 1093, leading to the loss of most of Deheubarth to Norman lords. Growing up, Rhys saw the challenges faced by Welsh kingdoms due to pressure from Anglo-Norman settlers and English royal authority, as his father and brothers tried to reclaim their ancestral lands.

He rose to prominence through his family's gradual recovery of territory and his skilled political maneuvering among both Welsh allies and English leaders. His ascent took place in the 12th century, a time when successful Welsh rulers had to balance resisting foreign control with making practical deals to keep their power.
