Biography

Rhys ap Maredudd (c. 1250 – 2 June 1292) was the last ruler of a part of Deheubarth, a medieval Welsh territory in south Wales. Born into the royal house of Deheubarth as the great-grandson of The Lord Rhys, a powerful 12th-century prince of south Wales, Rhys inherited a much smaller kingdom compared to his famous ancestor. After his father died in 1271, he took control of the Cantref Mawr area and believed he was the rightful caretaker of Dinefwr, the ancient royal capital of Deheubarth.

Unlike his father, Rhys chose not to respect the authority of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the Prince of Wales, which led to tensions between the two Welsh leaders. When the Anglo-Welsh war broke out in 1276-77, Rhys was among the first Welsh nobles to submit to King Edward I of England. This decision was driven by his hopes to reclaim ancestral lands like Maenordeilo, Mallaen, Caeo, Mabelfyw, and most importantly, Dinefwr Castle. His partnership with Edward I showed his ultimate aim to bring Deheubarth back together as a kingdom under English control.

Rhys held his position during the final Welsh wars of independence, notably refusing to back Llywelyn and his brother Dafydd ap Gruffudd during their last revolt in 1282-83. This loyalty to the English crown earned him more land from Edward I after the last native Prince of Wales died in 1282 and Dafydd was executed in 1283. However, Edward's refusal to give him Dinefwr Castle was a source of ongoing frustration, forcing Rhys to make Dryslwyn Castle his main home and start large building projects there.

Despite his earlier cooperation with the English, Rhys eventually led a large revolt against Edward I in 1287-88, taking advantage of the king's absence in Gascony. This rebellion marked his shift from being an English ally to a resistance leader, although it ultimately failed. He was married to Audra Hastings, showing the complex mix of Anglo-Welsh noble ties at that time. Rhys died in York in 1291, marking the end of the last serious effort to keep Welsh royal power in Deheubarth under the old order.

Before Fame

Born around 1250 into the fractured remains of what was once the strong kingdom of Deheubarth, Rhys ap Maredudd inherited a political situation much changed since his great-grandfather's time. The Lord Rhys had died in 1197, leaving behind a kingdom that quickly broke apart among rival heirs and faced growing pressure from both English expansion and the rising power of Gwynedd in north Wales.

Rhys grew up during a time when Welsh princes had to make tough choices between maintaining independence and preserving their territories by dealing with English power. His father ruled the Cantref Mawr under Llywelyn ap Gruffudd's nominal authority, but by the time Rhys took over in 1271, the political scene had become increasingly complex, with multiple Welsh rulers pursuing different strategies to survive in a time of expanding English influence.
