Biography
Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, in Southampton, England. His parents, who were of Indian descent, had moved to the UK from East Africa. Sunak grew up in a middle-class family; his father worked as a general practitioner, and his mother owned a pharmacy. He attended Winchester College, a well-known independent boarding school in England. Afterward, he studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford. He later got an MBA from Stanford University in California as a Fulbright Scholar, where he met his future wife, Akshata Murty, whose father is N. R. Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys and a billionaire from India.
Before Fame
Sunak grew up in a family that valued education and professional success. His parents, whose own parents were immigrants from the Punjab region of India and had moved to East Africa before settling in Britain, taught him the importance of economic stability and climbing the social ladder. He attended Winchester College, a top British school, and later went to Oxford and Stanford, where he built networks that would be important in his future financial and political careers.
Before entering politics, Sunak achieved a lot of financial success. He worked at Goldman Sachs and managed hedge funds, becoming wealthy on his own before running for Parliament at 34. Unlike many politicians with backgrounds in think tanks or law, Sunak's experience in quantitative finance was different and influenced how he dealt with economic issues in government.
