Sir Roland Algernon Penrose (14 October 1900 – 23 April 1984) was an English artist, historian, poet, and a leading supporter of Surrealism in the United Kingdom. Born in Sussex, Penrose went to Leighton Park School and Queens' College, Cambridge, where he nurtured a wide-ranging curiosity that influenced his later career in the arts. He connected with key members of the European avant-garde and was instrumental in introducing Surrealist ideas to British audiences during the mid-twentieth century.
Before Fame
Penrose was raised in a Quaker family in Sussex, which gave him a strong sense of social awareness and a unique perspective. After graduating from Queens' College, Cambridge, he moved to Paris in the 1920s and became part of the lively artistic scene in Montparnasse.
