Biography

Ryan Rodney Reynolds was born on October 23, 1976, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He's the youngest of four brothers and grew up in a middle-class Irish Catholic family. His father, James Chester Reynolds, worked as a food wholesaler, and his mother, Tamara Lee, worked in retail sales. Reynolds went to several schools, including Prince of Wales Secondary School and Kitsilano Secondary School, and briefly attended Kwantlen Polytechnic University. He also studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music, but his interest in acting soon took over.

Reynolds started his entertainment career in the early 1990s with small TV roles in Canadian productions. He got his big break with the Canadian teen soap opera "Hillside" (called "Fifteen" in the United States) from 1991 to 1993. This success led him to move to Los Angeles, where he faced some struggles at first but eventually landed roles in various TV series and made-for-TV movies in the late 1990s. His film career started with comedic roles, where he showed his charm, quick comedic timing, and talent for connecting with audiences.

The 2000s saw Reynolds become a leading man in Hollywood. He starred in romantic comedies like "The Proposal" (2009) alongside Sandra Bullock, which was a box office hit and helped him gain wide appeal. However, it was his role as the Marvel antihero Deadpool that made him a major star. After an unpopular turn as the character in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" (2009), Reynolds pushed for a standalone Deadpool movie that stayed true to the character's funny comic book style. When "Deadpool" came out in 2016, it was a huge hit and became one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever.

Besides acting, Reynolds has become a successful entrepreneur and producer. He co-owns Aviation Gin, which he bought in 2018 and sold to Diageo for about $610 million. His business skills also show in his film projects, where he often has a role as producer and some creative control. Reynolds is known for his witty social media activity, often joking with other celebrities and promoting his work with humor and self-deprecation. His marriage to actress Blake Lively in 2012 keeps him in the spotlight, and the couple is one of Hollywood's most watched pairs.

Before Fame

Growing up in Vancouver during the 1980s and early 1990s, Reynolds was part of a working-class family where humor was a way to cope. He has talked openly about his father's struggle with Parkinson's disease and how comedy helped in dealing with tough family times. As a teenager, Reynolds took on various jobs like grocery bagging and delivering newspapers while also trying to break into acting in Vancouver's expanding film and TV industry.

In the early 1990s, the Canadian entertainment industry was growing thanks to favorable exchange rates and tax incentives that drew in American productions. This growth gave young Canadian actors like Reynolds chances to gain experience in TV and film. His early work on "Hillside" came at a time when programs for teens were becoming popular, paving the way for his eventual move to Hollywood and shift into feature films.
