Biography

Salva Kiir Mayardit, born on September 13, 1951, in Bahr el Ghazal, is a politician from South Sudan who became the first President of the country after its independence in 2011. As a member of the Dinka ethnic group, Kiir has played a major role in South Sudan's fight for independence and has been a key figure in its political scene for over 50 years.

Kiir's military and political journey started when he was a teenager. He joined the Anyanya rebels in 1967, fighting for Southern Sudanese independence during the First Sudanese Civil War. When the Second Sudanese Civil War began in 1983, he joined the newly formed Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) led by John Garang, working in its military wing, the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). Through hard work and military skill, Kiir climbed the ranks to become one of the group's top commanders.

John Garang's death in July 2005, just months after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement granting Southern Sudan autonomy, was a pivotal moment for Kiir. He was made Commander-in-Chief of the SPLA and took the lead of the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan, while also serving as First Vice President of Sudan. This dual role positioned him as the main leader of the South during the important transition period leading to independence.

Kiir successfully guided the process toward South Sudanese independence. He won re-election as President in the 2010 general election and oversaw the 2011 independence referendum, where the majority supported secession. On July 9, 2011, he became the first President of the newly independent Republic of South Sudan. However, his presidency has faced major issues, including civil conflict, economic troubles, and strong criticism from human rights groups and former political allies who accuse him of authoritarian rule, corruption, and limiting political opposition and press freedom.

Before Fame

Salva Kiir was born into the Dinka community in Bahr el Ghazal and grew up during a time of rising tension between Sudan's Arab-led north and mainly African south. The cultural, religious, and economic differences between these areas shaped the course of his life's work. At just 16 years old in 1967, Kiir joined the Anyanya rebel movement, starting his lifelong involvement in the Southern Sudanese fight for independence.

Kiir's rise to prominence was influenced by Sudan's long civil conflicts and the systematic neglect of Southern Sudan by the central government in Khartoum. The discovery of oil in Southern Sudan in the 1970s made these tensions worse, as the government tried to tap into these resources while offering little benefit to the locals. These conditions produced a generation of Southern Sudanese leaders, including Kiir, who devoted their lives to armed resistance and political activism.
