Biography
Samia Suluhu Hassan was born on January 27, 1960, in Makunduchi, Zanzibar, Tanzania. She is a Tanzanian politician and economist who became the sixth president of Tanzania on March 19, 2021, becoming the first woman in the role. She took office following the passing of her predecessor, John Magufuli, after serving as his vice president since the 2015 general election. They had been re-elected for a second term in 2020 on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi ticket before his death.
Hassan advanced her political career steadily through roles in Zanzibar's semi-autonomous government, holding ministerial roles from 2000 to 2010. She served as the Member of Parliament for the Makunduchi constituency from 2010 to 2015, while also being the Minister of State in the Vice-President's Office for Union Affairs. In 2014, she was elected vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly responsible for drafting Tanzania's new constitution, significantly boosting her national profile before the 2015 elections.
Once president, Hassan quickly set herself apart from Magufuli, especially concerning the COVID-19 pandemic. While Magufuli had downplayed the virus and resisted public health measures, Hassan implemented policies to control its spread. Her early presidency drew praise from international observers and earned her a reputation as a reformist leader. She focused on infrastructure expansion and aimed to attract foreign investment and boost the tourism industry to better connect Tanzania with the global economy.
Hassan is married to Hafidh Ameir and has received multiple honors for her leadership, such as being named to Time magazine's Time 100 list in 2022 and receiving the CARE International award that year. She was awarded honorary degrees in 2022, 2023, and 2024 from several institutions, highlighting her international recognition. In 2025, she received the Order of Merit of Samoa.
However, Hassan's presidency has faced growing criticism over democratic governance. In the 2025 Tanzanian general election, her administration banned the main opposition party, Chadema, from taking part. The party's leader, Tundu Lissu, was arrested and charged with treason. The election saw reports of violence and irregularities, leading to protests at home and concern abroad. Scholars increasingly describe her leadership as authoritarian, showing a major shift in how her presidency is viewed.
Before Fame
Samia Suluhu Hassan grew up in Makunduchi, a town at the southern tip of Unguja, the main island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. She attended several schools, including Lumumba Secondary School, Mzumbe University, and The Open University of Tanzania. She also studied at the University of Manchester and Southern New Hampshire University, focusing on economics and public administration, which laid the groundwork for her career in government.
Her public service journey started in Zanzibar's regional government, where she took on ministerial roles from 2000. This was a time of significant political tension in Zanzibar, with previous contested elections and civil unrest. Moving up in such an environment meant dealing with complex political situations at both the local and national levels. Hassan's steady progress through regional and then national institutions showed her policy skills and her ability to form alliances within the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.
