Biography

Óscar José Rafael Berger Perdomo was born on August 11, 1946, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He went to Xavier Lyceum and later studied law at Rafael Landívar University, laying the groundwork for his future in business and politics. Early in his career, he found success in the private sector, gaining expertise in business management and economic policy, which later influenced his political views.

Berger started his public service as the mayor of Guatemala City in 1991, serving until 1999. As mayor, he prioritized urban development and infrastructure improvements to boost the city's functionality and economic potential. His skills and business knowledge allowed him to manage the city efficiently and responsibly. This role gave him key insights into public administration, preparing him for higher office.

In 2004, Berger was elected the 46th president of Guatemala, serving a four-year term until 2008. His presidency focused on attracting foreign investment and promoting economic growth in a country struggling with poverty and instability. He introduced policies to improve the business environment and strengthen Guatemala’s international market standing. His administration also maintained diplomatic ties with neighboring countries and international allies.

During his presidency, Berger faced challenges such as addressing social inequality, managing public finances, and handling security issues common in Central America at the time. His governance approach drew from his business experience, focusing on pragmatic solutions and economic development to drive national progress. After his presidential term, he returned to private life but stayed active in business. His marriage to Wendy de Berger offered personal support throughout his public career, and in 2007, he was awarded the Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic for his contributions to international relations.
