Biography

Sheila Dikshit, originally Sheila Kapoor, was born on 31 March 1938 in Kapurthala, Punjab. She was a major political figure in India during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. She gained national attention as the Chief Minister of Delhi, serving three consecutive terms from 1998 to 2013. This made her the longest-serving chief minister in the history of the National Capital Territory and the longest-serving female chief minister in India. Her 15-year tenure greatly improved Delhi's urban infrastructure and strengthened her position within the Indian National Congress party.

Dikshit attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary, and later, Miranda House at the University of Delhi, which influenced her intellectual and public life. Her political journey began with her involvement in the Congress party, where she became known for effectively managing the political complexities of one of the world's largest capital cities. Under her leadership, Delhi's public transport system improved with the expansion of the Delhi Metro and upgrades to roads, power supply, and civic amenities, especially before the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Dikshit's political activities weren't limited to Delhi. In 2014, after the Congress party lost in the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections to the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal formed a minority government, she was appointed Governor of Kerala but served briefly. She was also considered as the Congress candidate for Chief Minister in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections but withdrew before Akhilesh Yadav was chosen.

In the last year of her life, on 10 January 2019, Dikshit was made president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, leading the party’s election campaign in Delhi. She stayed in this role until her death on 20 July 2019 in Delhi. She received an honorary doctorate for her contributions to public service. Her passing marked the end of a long political career and the loss of one of Congress's most experienced leaders in urban governance.

Before Fame

Sheila Dikshit was born in Kapurthala in 1938, during the period leading up to Indian independence, a time of significant political and social change in the region. Growing up in post-partition India, she attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary and later studied at Miranda House, University of Delhi, when higher education for women in India was much less common than it is today. These early years gave her a strong base in public affairs and civic life.

Her entry into politics was influenced by her strong ties with the Indian National Congress, the party that led India to independence. She married into a politically active family and gradually became more involved in party activities, building the administrative skills and political connections that would eventually lead her to become the Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998.
