Biography
Shigeru Ishiba was born on February 4, 1957, in Chiyoda, Tokyo, to politician Jirō Ishiba. He went to schools associated with Tottori University, attended Keio Senior High School, and graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Law in 1979. After university, Ishiba began a career in banking before moving into politics following his father's death.
Ishiba was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1986 at age 29, representing the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). His political journey included periods of shifting party affiliations during the 1990s. He left the LDP in 1993 to join the Japan Renewal Party and was part of various political groups before returning to the LDP in 1997. This party switching paralleled the wider political changes in Japan after the end of LDP's single-party rule.
During his time in parliament, Ishiba focused on agriculture and defense policies. He was the parliamentary vice minister of agriculture under Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and later became the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries under Tarō Asō from 2008 to 2009. He also built his defense credentials as Director-General of the Defense Agency under Junichiro Koizumi and as Minister of Defense under Yasuo Fukuda from 2007 to 2008, when the agency became a full ministry.
Ishiba aimed for party leadership with several unsuccessful runs for LDP president. He first ran in 2008, finishing fifth, and then challenged Shinzo Abe in 2012 and 2018. Despite his criticism of LDP factional politics, he formed his own faction, Suigetsukai, in 2015. After placing third in the 2020 leadership contest behind Yoshihide Suga and opting not to run in 2021, Ishiba achieved his goal in 2024, defeating Sanae Takaichi to become LDP president and Prime Minister. However, his time in office was short, ending in 2025 when he resigned from both roles. He is married to Yoshiko Ishiba and continues to represent Tottori 1st district since 1996.
Before Fame
Growing up as the son of politician Jirō Ishiba, Shigeru Ishiba was introduced to politics early on. He attended Tottori University-affiliated schools before enrolling in the well-known Keio University, where he studied law. After graduating from Keio University in 1979, he chose to start a career in banking instead of immediately following in his father's political footsteps.
After his father's death, Ishiba felt both the opportunity and perhaps the duty to pursue a political career. At 29, he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1986, marking the beginning of a political career that would last nearly 40 years. Early on, he focused on agricultural and defense policy, which distinguished him from many of his peers and laid the groundwork for his later roles as a minister.
