Biography
Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, born on December 18, 1975, in Adelaide, Australia, is a singer, songwriter, record producer, composer, and film director with a unique voice in today's pop music. She attended Adelaide High School and started her music career in the mid-1990s as the lead singer for the acid jazz band Crisp. When Crisp broke up in 1997, Sia released her first solo album, OnlySee, only in Australia. This was the start of her career, which later gained international fame across different musical styles. Her early work showed her willingness to try unconventional sounds and personal themes.
Sia's career took off when she moved to London and collaborated with the English duo Zero 7, providing vocals that highlighted her unique voice and emotional depth. During this time, she released Healing Is Difficult in 2001 and Colour the Small One in 2004, which showed her growing as an artist and gaining wider notice. Moving to New York City in 2005 marked another major phase of her career, leading to US tours and the release of Some People Have Real Problems (2008) and We Are Born (2010). These albums went gold according to the Australian Recording Industry Association, boosting her commercial success.
Despite her rising fame as a performer, Sia felt increasingly uncomfortable with the spotlight and chose to focus on songwriting for others. This period was very successful as she wrote big hits like "Titanium" with David Guetta, "Diamonds" for Rihanna, "Wild Ones" with Flo Rida, and "Pretty Hurts" for Beyoncé. These collaborations solidified her reputation as a top songwriter in the music industry, known for creating catchy anthems while keeping her artistic values.
Sia returned to solo work with 1000 Forms of Fear (2016), which hit number one on the US Billboard 200 and included the worldwide hit "Chandelier." The album's success was boosted by creative music videos featuring child dancer Maddie Ziegler, which Sia co-directed, gaining cultural significance. Her next album, This Is Acting (2016), continued her commercial success with the hit "Cheap Thrills," and her Nostalgic for the Present Tour featured elaborate performance art. Beyond music, Sia has worked in film composition and direction, including her controversial film debut Music (2021), and has been committed to animal rights advocacy. Her discography also includes the Christmas album Everyday Is Christmas (2017), the group LSD project with Diplo and Labrinth (2019), and Reasonable Woman (2024).
Before Fame
Growing up in Adelaide during the 1980s and 1990s, Sia was influenced by Australia’s alternative music scene, which was gaining international fame with bands like INXS and Midnight Oil. After finishing her education at Adelaide High School, she got involved in the local music scene at a time when acid jazz and electronic music were making a comeback globally, with artists like Jamiroquai and Portishead inspiring many musicians. Her time with Crisp in the mid-1990s came as Australia started making its mark as a key player in music, film, and the arts on the world stage.
