Sigurd Risting (13 May 1870 – 14 October 1935) was a Norwegian writer, historian, and school administrator whose career spanned over the late 1800s and early 1900s. He was born in Sunnfjord, western Norway, an area known for its fjords and close-knit rural communities. His early education was shaped by the Norwegian folk high school tradition, which focused on building national identity and practical skills among ordinary people.
Risting studied at Nordfjords amtskole and Sogndals Folkehøgskule, two schools promoting the popular education movement spreading through Scandinavia in the late 1800s. He completed his teacher training at Stord lærarskule in 1889, gaining qualifications that would guide his career. These early years sparked his interest in teaching and Norwegian history and culture.
Risting's career in education grew steadily. In 1893, he started as a second teacher at Skiringssals ungdomsskule, a school for rural youth. By 1896, he became the principal, a role that put him at the heart of educational life in the community. His time as principal showed Norway's push at that time to expand education beyond cities to smaller towns and rural areas.
While handling his administrative duties, Risting also wrote and studied history. Through his writing and research, he helped document and interpret Norwegian culture and history at a time when Norway was building its national story, especially after breaking away from Sweden in 1905.
