Biography
Scott John Morrison (born 13 May 1968) is an Australian former politician who was the 30th Prime Minister of Australia from August 2018 to May 2022. Born in Sydney, Morrison went to Sydney Boys High School and then studied economic geography at the University of New South Wales. Early in his career, he worked in tourism promotion and management, including being the director of the New Zealand Office of Tourism and Sport from 1998 to 2000 and managing director of Tourism Australia from 2004 to 2006. Between these roles, he was the state director of the New South Wales Liberal Party from 2000 to 2004, building his reputation within the party.
Morrison entered federal politics in 2007, elected as the Member of Parliament for the division of Cook in New South Wales, a role he held until 2024. After the Liberal-National coalition's win in the 2013 election, he became Minister for Immigration and Border Protection in Tony Abbott's government, managing the rollout of Operation Sovereign Borders. His roles expanded when he became Minister for Social Services in 2014, and then he was promoted to Treasurer in September 2015 under Malcolm Turnbull.
In August 2018, after a Liberal Party leadership crisis, Morrison became a compromise candidate, defeating Peter Dutton and Julie Bishop to become party leader and Prime Minister. He stepped into the role amid party tensions following Dutton's challenge to Turnbull's leadership. Although his leadership faced skepticism at first, he led the Coalition to an unexpected win in the 2019 federal election, securing another term.
While Prime Minister, Morrison's time in office was largely focused on responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he set up the National Cabinet to coordinate between federal and state governments. His government also implemented major economic measures, like the stage three tax cuts. He faced criticism on various issues, including the handling of the 2019-20 Australian bushfires and some aspects of pandemic management. Morrison's political career ended when the Coalition lost the 2022 federal election to Labor, led by Anthony Albanese, marking the end of his time as Prime Minister and party leader. He is married to Jenny Morrison and has been awarded several honors, including the Legion of Merit and Companion of the Order of Australia in 2025.
Before Fame
Morrison's rise in politics started with his work in tourism and marketing, giving him executive experience and a public profile. His position at Tourism Australia, in particular, gave him national exposure and showed his skills in managing large organizations. His involvement with the New South Wales Liberal Party as state director helped him build extensive networks within conservative political circles and understand political campaigning and party management.
The political climate of the mid-2000s, marked by debates over border security, economic management, and social policy, provided the setting for Morrison's move into federal politics. His business background and experience in party organization positioned him well for advancement within the Liberal Party, especially since the party was looking for candidates with practical management experience rather than just political backgrounds.
