Biography

Slavoj Žižek was born on March 21, 1949, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, which was then part of Yugoslavia. He went to Bežigrad Grammar School and then studied at the University of Ljubljana and Paris 8 University. Žižek became known as one of the most provocative and famous philosophers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, creating a unique approach that mixes Lacanian psychoanalysis, German idealism, and Marxist theory.

Žižek holds several notable academic positions. He is the international director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities at the University of London, Global Distinguished Professor of German at New York University, professor of philosophy and psychoanalysis at the European Graduate School, and senior researcher at the Institute for Sociology and Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana. His work covers continental philosophy, political theory, film criticism, and theology, focusing on Hegelianism, psychoanalysis, and Marxism.

As a founding member of the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis, Žižek introduced this influential group to international audiences with his 1989 English debut, 'The Sublime Object of Ideology.' The Ljubljana School focuses on German idealism, Lacanian psychoanalysis, ideology critique, and media criticism. Žižek has written over 50 books in several languages and speaks Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, English, German, and French.

Žižek's public persona is known for its unique style, using obscene humor, popular culture references, and politically incorrect provocations. This has made him famous worldwide while also drawing controversy and criticism both inside and outside academic circles. His magazine articles, public lectures, and media appearances have made him one of the most recognized public intellectuals of his time. He has been married twice, first to fellow academic Renata Salecl and then to Jela Krečič. He has received awards like the Ambassador of Science of the Republic of Slovenia and the Gold Medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in 2018 for his work in philosophy and cultural criticism.

Before Fame

Žižek grew intellectually during the unusual political environment of socialist Yugoslavia, where he was introduced to both Marxist ideas and Western philosophy. He studied at the University of Ljubljana and later at Paris 8 University, where he delved into French intellectual movements, especially the work of Jacques Lacan, which became a key part of his theories.

In the 1980s, the Ljubljana School of Psychoanalysis emerged, offering a stage for Žižek's early work. This group of Slovenian thinkers created new ways to blend psychoanalytic theory with political and cultural criticism, standing out in Europe as Yugoslavia went through political changes.
