Biography
Steven Frederic Seagal was born on April 10, 1952, in Lansing, Michigan. From a young age, he was interested in martial arts, eventually going to Japan for intensive training where he earned a 7th-dan black belt and the title of shihan in Aikikai aikido. He became the first non-Japanese person to run an aikido dojo in Japan, proving his dedication to the art. He later moved to Los Angeles, teaching aikido before moving into the film industry.
Seagal's acting debut came in 1988 with Above the Law, one of the early American films to showcase aikido in its fight scenes. His physical style and on-screen charisma quickly drew the attention of studios, leading to more action films. His career hit its high point with 1992's Under Siege, where he played Navy SEAL counter-terrorism expert Casey Ryback. The film was a big box office hit and is his most famous work. He returned as the same character in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory in 1995. In 1994, he directed and starred in On Deadly Ground, a film that earned him the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Director in 1995.
Besides acting, Seagal has explored music, releasing two albums, Songs from the Crystal Cave and Mojo Priest. He worked with artists like Stevie Wonder and Tony Rebel on his debut album. Seagal has also ventured into business with energy drinks and therapeutic oils. His personal life includes marriages to Adrienne La Russa, Miyako Fujitani, Kelly Le Brock, and Erdenetuya Batsukh.
Seagal has openly supported Russian President Vladimir Putin and backed Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. Granted Russian citizenship in 2016, he was appointed as a special representative for Russian-American humanitarian ties. In 2023, Seagal received Russia's Order of Friendship. His political views have faced much criticism in the United States and elsewhere. Since 1991, multiple women have accused him of sexual harassment or assault, further affecting his public image.
Later in his career, Seagal moved mainly to direct-to-video films and TV projects, including the reality series Steven Seagal: Lawman, which followed his work as a reserve deputy sheriff. He also played the main villain in Robert Rodriguez's Machete in 2010. In 2004, he was honored by the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame for his role in popularizing aikido in Western culture.
Before Fame
Steven Seagal grew up in Lansing, Michigan, and later in Fullerton, California, where he started learning martial arts as a teenager. Inspired by Asian martial arts when people like Bruce Lee were introducing Western audiences to Eastern fighting styles, Seagal took his training very seriously. In the early 1970s, he moved to Japan, where he lived for about ten years, studying aikido with experienced masters and eventually opening his own dojo.
His time in Japan shaped him in ways that went beyond martial arts skills. He married Miyako Fujitani, who had family ties to the aikido community, and he became deeply involved in Japanese martial culture. Returning to the United States in the 1980s, Seagal used his reputation as a martial arts instructor and his connections in the entertainment industry to start an acting career, arriving in Hollywood when action films featuring martial arts were getting significant studio funding.
