Biography

Surya Bahadur Thapa was born on March 21, 1928, in Dhankuta, in the hilly eastern region of Nepal. He studied at the University of Allahabad in India, a path often taken by young Nepalis who wanted formal education that wasn't available at home. His time abroad introduced him to the political trends of South Asia during the mid-20th century, preparing him for his lengthy career in public administration and governance.

Thapa began his public life in 1958 when he was chosen as a member of Nepal's advisory council and later elected as its chairperson. In 1959, he joined the Upper House of Parliament. He quickly rose through Nepal's government ranks, becoming chair of the Council of Ministers in 1963 and starting his first term as Prime Minister until 1964. He was the first Prime Minister under the Panchayat system, the partyless political order set by King Mahendra that shaped Nepali governance for thirty years.

Thapa served four more terms as Prime Minister: from 1965 to 1969, from 1979 to 1983, from 1997 to 1998, and again starting in 2003. These terms took place under three different kings — Mahendra, Birendra, and Gyanendra — showing his political adaptability and his status as a seasoned statesman. Even between his terms, he remained active and influential in Nepali politics.

In his later years, Thapa became a key leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, linked with supporters of the Panchayat system. He left the RPP in November 2004 after his last term as Prime Minister. His career, spanning over fifty years, outlasted the monarchy itself as Nepal became a federal democratic republic in 2008 after a decade-long Maoist insurgency and the monarchy's end.

Surya Bahadur Thapa passed away on April 15, 2015, in New Delhi, India, from respiratory failure during surgery. He was 87. His death occurred just days before a major earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, 2015. He is remembered for serving as Prime Minister more times than anyone else in Nepal's history, a testament to the country's turbulent and often changing political scene in the latter half of the 20th century.

Before Fame

Surya Bahadur Thapa was born in 1928 in Dhankuta, eastern Nepal, when the country was still under the autocratic rule of the Rana oligarchy, which had controlled power for nearly a century. Opportunities for formal education in Nepal were severely limited by the Rana regime, which intentionally restricted literacy and modern schooling to maintain its power. Like many ambitious Nepalis of that time, Thapa went to India to get an education, attending the University of Allahabad, a well-established institution in South Asia.

During his youth and early adulthood, the Rana rule ended in 1951, and Nepal began its uncertain journey with constitutional politics. The political changes following the monarchy's restoration under King Tribhuvan allowed a new generation of educated Nepalis to get into public service. Thapa joined this emerging administrative and political class, and by 1958, he had secured a spot on the national advisory council. This marked the start of a public career that would shape his life for the next fifty years.
