Biography

Thomas Dufferin Pattullo, commonly known as Duff Pattullo, was born on January 19, 1873, in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. He started as a journalist before moving into politics and public administration in western Canada. His ambitions led him to the opportunities in the Pacific Northwest, where he spent most of his career and established a long-lasting political presence in British Columbia.

Before Fame

Pattullo grew up in Woodstock, Ontario, at a time when Canada was expanding westward and new territories were drawing ambitious young men from eastern areas. He went into journalism as a young man, a field that improved his communication skills and gave him insight into public affairs. Moving to the Yukon during the Gold Rush and later to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, put him in the middle of some of Canada's most energetic development at the turn of the twentieth century. These experiences in frontier administration and land development gave him the practical knowledge and political connections that would eventually kickstart his legislative career.
