Biography
Tijs Michiel Verwest, known as Tiësto, was born on January 17, 1969, in Breda, Netherlands. He became one of the most influential figures in electronic dance music, gaining fame as both a groundbreaking DJ and a successful record producer. His career began to form in the 1990s when he started performing at local clubs and slowly earned a name in the Dutch electronic music scene.
In 1997, Tiësto co-founded Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink, creating a platform to release his own work and that of other electronic artists. The label became known for his popular Magik and In Search of Sunrise compilation series, which helped build his international reputation. Starting in 1998, his collaboration with producer Dennis Waakop Reijers was key in shaping his unique sound. Between 1998 and 2000, he worked with Ferry Corsten under the project name Gouryella, producing several trance anthems that received widespread praise.
In the early 2000s, Tiësto moved from being an underground favorite to achieving mainstream success. His 2000 remix of Delerium's "Silence" featuring Sarah McLachlan introduced his music to listeners beyond the electronic music community. This success led to the release of his first solo album "In My Memory" in 2001, which included several hit singles and confirmed him as a major recording artist. His success was cemented when DJ Magazine named him the world's number one DJ for three years in a row from 2002 to 2004.
Tiësto's career hit new heights with his performance at the 2004 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens, where he made history as the first DJ to perform live at an Olympic Games. His later albums, like "Just Be" (2004), "Elements of Life" (2007), "Kaleidoscope" (2009), and "A Town Called Paradise" (2014), showed his growth as an artist and his skill in adapting to new musical trends. In 2007, he launched his radio show "Tiësto's Club Life," further increasing his media presence. His work in the industry was honored with a Grammy Award in 2015 for Best Remixed Recording for his version of John Legend's "All of Me." He is married to Annika Backes and has received many honors, including being named an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau and becoming an honorary citizen of North-Brabant in 2011.
Before Fame
Growing up in Breda during the 1970s and 1980s, Tiësto experienced the rise of electronic music in Europe. The Netherlands was becoming a key area for electronic music growth, with house and techno scenes emerging in Amsterdam and other big cities. As a young man, he was attracted to DJ culture and started learning how to mix and produce music.
The late 1980s and early 1990s were marked by the explosion of rave culture across Europe, with the Netherlands playing a key role. This environment was ideal for aspiring DJs and producers like Tiësto to hone their skills and find audiences eager for electronic music. He began performing at local venues and gradually built a following through his technical skills and his knack for reading crowds, paving the way for his later international success.
