Biography

Turlough O'Carolan (Irish: Toirdhealbhach Ó Cearbhalláin; 1670 – 25 March 1738) was an Irish harpist, composer, poet, and singer, and he is one of the most important figures in Irish traditional music. Born in County Meath, O'Carolan is seen by many as Ireland's national composer. This is especially remarkable because he was blind from an early age and never formally trained as a composer. His fame comes mainly from his incredible talent for creating melodies, with over two hundred tunes still played regularly today.

Before Fame

O'Carolan was born in 1670 in County Meath, Ireland. When he was young, he caught smallpox, which caused him to go blind. After this, the MacDermott Roe family from Alderford, County Roscommon, took him under their wing and helped him learn to play the harp. At that time in Gaelic Ireland, it was common for noble families to support harpers as part of a long-standing cultural tradition. After about three years of training, O'Carolan was provided with a horse, a guide, and some money, and he began working as a traveling harper, going around Ireland and composing music for the people who hosted him.

Key Achievements

  • Composed over two hundred tunes that remain core repertoire in Irish traditional music
  • Achieved widespread recognition as Ireland's national composer despite lacking formal classical training
  • Synthesized elements of continental Baroque music with older Gaelic harping traditions in his compositions
  • Sustained a decades-long career as an itinerant harper through aristocratic and gentry patronage across Ireland
  • His piece 'Farewell to Music,' believed to be his final composition, is regarded as one of the finest examples of the older Gaelic harping style
