Biography
Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua was born on July 28, 1952, as the second child and only son of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit. He became Crown Prince at 20 in 1972 and took the throne on December 1, 2016, after his father's 70-year reign ended. His coronation was in May 2019, officially making him King Rama X of the Chakri Dynasty, which has led Thailand since 1782.
The new king was educated both in Thailand and abroad, attending schools in Thailand and the United Kingdom. He also underwent military training at the Royal Military College Duntroon in Australia. He completed flight training and qualified as a pilot in the Royal Thai Air Force, eventually reaching the rank of Air Chief Marshal. His military background remains central to his identity as king, continuing the Thai tradition of strong ties between the monarchy and the armed forces.
King Vajiralongkorn's reign began during a politically uncertain time in Thailand, with the country under military rule following a 2014 coup. His rise to the throne came with constitutional changes that increased royal power and influence over government affairs. The king lives in both Thailand and Germany, carrying out his royal duties in various places while adapting traditional monarchy roles to fit modern times.
Throughout his time as Crown Prince and later as king, Vajiralongkorn has been engaged in various royal projects and ceremonies, continuing the monarchy's place in Thai society. His reign has seen attempts to modernize some aspects of the monarchy while keeping its central role in Thai culture and politics. The transition from his father's long reign to his own is a big change in Thailand's recent history, as the country adjusts to new royal leadership after years of stability under the previous king.
Before Fame
As heir apparent, Vajiralongkorn spent years getting ready for kingship with guidance from his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was greatly respected in Thailand. He grew up during a time when Thailand was modernizing and developing economically in the late 20th century, moving from a mainly agricultural society to a more industrialized nation.
The Crown Prince's early adult years aligned with political changes in Thailand, such as student uprisings in the 1970s and several military coups in the following decades. This political instability helped shape the context for his future role as king, as Thailand kept balancing traditional monarchy, military influence, and democratic governance.
