Biography
Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych was born on July 9, 1950, in Yenakiieve, a mining town in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. He got his technical education at Donetsk National Technical University, studying mechanical engineering and later gaining more qualifications in economics and law. He started his career in transportation, working as a driver and eventually moving up to managerial roles in regional transport companies during the Soviet era.
Yanukovych got into politics in the 1990s after Ukraine became independent, getting involved in regional administration in Donetsk Oblast. He was the governor of Donetsk Oblast from 1997 to 2002, where he built political support in Ukraine's Russian-speaking industrial region. During this time, he joined the Party of Regions, which pushed for closer ties with Russia and represented eastern Ukraine's heavy industry and mining interests.
In 2002, Yanukovych became Prime Minister under President Leonid Kuchma, serving until 2004. He ran as the pro-Russian candidate in the 2004 presidential election against Viktor Yushchenko, which led to the Orange Revolution due to widespread claims of electoral fraud. The Supreme Court ordered a new vote, which Yanukovych lost to Yushchenko. Despite this, he returned as Prime Minister from 2006 to 2007 in a coalition government.
Yanukovych won the 2010 presidential election in a tight race against Yulia Tymoshenko, becoming Ukraine's fourth president. His presidency focused on strengthening ties with Russia, including agreements on natural gas and extending Russia's lease on naval facilities in Crimea. His decision in November 2013 to pause preparations for an association agreement with the European Union sparked massive protests in Kyiv known as Euromaidan. The protests grew into a larger movement against corruption and authoritarianism, eventually causing Yanukovych to flee Ukraine in February 2014. After his departure, the Ukrainian parliament removed him from office, and he has been in exile in Russia since then.
Before Fame
Yanukovych grew up in the industrial Donbas region when the Soviet Union was focusing heavily on developing its industries. His early life was influenced by the working-class culture of coal mining and steel production that was prominent in eastern Ukraine. After finishing his technical education, he worked in the transportation sector throughout the 1970s and 1980s, gradually moving from manual labor to administrative positions.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it opened up new avenues for ambitious individuals to engage in politics and business. Yanukovych used his connections in the transport industry and his understanding of regional economics to step into public administration during the chaotic 1990s, a time when many former Soviet officials aimed to establish themselves in the newly independent Ukrainian state.
