Biography

Walid Mohi Edine al-Muallem was born on January 13, 1941, in Damascus, Syria, and became a key figure in Arab diplomacy. A member of the ruling Ba'ath Party, he spent his career working for Syria, representing the country through major geopolitical changes. He passed away on November 16, 2020, in Damascus, having worked in government roles until shortly before his death.

Muallem studied at Cairo University, gaining the knowledge that would support his long diplomatic career. He joined Syria's foreign service and climbed the ranks, gaining broad experience in negotiations. One of his important roles was as Syrian Ambassador to the United States during the 1990s. In Washington, he took part in talks on the Arab-Israeli peace process and managed a cautious diplomatic relationship between Syria and the West.

In 2006, President Bashar al-Assad appointed Muallem as Syria's Foreign Minister, a position he held until he died fourteen years later. He was also made Deputy Prime Minister, a sign of his senior role in the Syrian government. As Foreign Minister, Muallem was the leading voice of Syrian diplomacy during challenging times. When the Syrian civil war started in 2011, he became the main spokesman for the government, defending the Assad administration's stance before the United Nations, at meetings with foreign leaders, and in global press conferences.

During the civil war, Muallem worked closely with Russian and Iranian officials, whose countries supported the Syrian government militarily and politically. He opposed Western views of the conflict and any international intervention, describing the government's military actions as counter-terrorism efforts. He represented Syria in peace talks, like those in Geneva, often arguing with opposition groups and Western diplomats about possible political solutions.

Muallem stayed in his role as Syria dealt with severe international sanctions and growing diplomatic isolation. Despite Syria's exclusion from various international platforms and suspension from the Arab League for several years, he maintained foreign relations focused on alliances with Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. He died in Damascus in November 2020, after more than four decades in Syrian diplomacy.

Before Fame

Walid al-Muallem grew up in Damascus during a time of major political change in the Arab world. The 1950s and 1960s saw the rise of ideologies like pan-Arab nationalism and Ba'athism, which changed Syria's political scene and opened doors for young Syrians to join the government. His education at Cairo University put him at the heart of Arab nationalism, especially since Egypt under Nasser was seen as the center of the movement.

After graduating, Muallem joined Syria's diplomatic service and made a name for himself through various international assignments. His role as Ambassador to the United States in the 1990s was particularly important, as it exposed him to top-level American diplomats and the intricate talks on Middle East peace during the Oslo period. This experience gave him a deep understanding of Western foreign policy and honed his negotiation skills, which became a key part of his later career.
