William Robert FitzGerald, 2nd Duke of Leinster, KP, PC (Ire), was born on 12 or 13 March 1749 in London. He was the son of James FitzGerald, 1st Duke of Leinster, and Lady Emily Lennox. When his father passed away in 1773, he became the leading duke, marquess, and earl of Ireland, putting him at the highest level of Irish aristocracy. He studied at Eton College, where he received the classical education typical for young men of his status, preparing him for a future in public duty and politics.
