Biography
Zakir Abdul Karim Naik was born on October 18, 1965, in Mumbai, India. He studied medicine at Kishinchand Chellaram College and later at Topiwala National Medical College and BYL Nair Hospital, both connected with the University of Mumbai. After finishing his medical studies, Naik worked as a physician and surgeon while also developing an interest in Islamic scholarship and comparative religion.
In the 1990s, Naik started the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) to promote Islamic education and interfaith dialogue. He became well-known for his unique style of religious talks, giving lectures in English and wearing Western clothes instead of traditional Islamic robes. He frequently quoted from various religious texts, including the Quran, Bible, and Hindu scriptures, to explain Islam's teachings and its relationship with other religions.
Naik's reach grew significantly when Peace TV, a satellite television network, began broadcasting his lectures and Islamic programs to a global audience. The channel became one of the most popular Islamic TV networks worldwide, attracting millions of viewers across many regions. His lectures, often several hours long, drew large crowds both in person and on television, making him one of the most well-known Islamic speakers of his time.
In 2016, while Naik was traveling, the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused him of promoting hate speech and money laundering. The government banned the Islamic Research Foundation and stopped the broadcasting of Peace TV in India. Naik denied all allegations but chose not to return to India, obtaining permanent residency in Malaysia instead. The Indian National Investigation Agency has declared him a wanted fugitive, but efforts to get an Interpol red notice have failed due to what international authorities say is a lack of evidence.
Despite the legal challenges in India, Naik continues his religious work from Malaysia. Peace TV is still banned in several countries, including India, Bangladesh, Canada, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom, due to various hate speech regulations. He has received recognition in the Islamic world, including the King Faisal International Prize for Service to Islam in 2015 and the Dubai International Holy Quran Award in 2013. His impact on modern Islamic discussions, especially in South Asia and among English-speaking Muslims, remains significant despite the controversies around his work.
