Biography

Jean-Claude Van Damme, born Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg on October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, Belgium, began studying Shotokan karate at age ten, encouraged by his father. He became highly skilled in martial arts, earning a 2nd Dan in karate. In his teens, he excelled in martial arts and bodybuilding, winning the middleweight championship of the European Professional Karate Association in 1979 and the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title in 1978.

Dreaming of Hollywood, Van Damme moved to the United States in 1982. After struggling with minor film roles, he got his big break in the martial arts film Bloodsport in 1988, which made him a star and earned him the nickname 'The Muscles from Brussels.' In the late 1980s and 1990s, he became a major box office attraction with hits like Kickboxer, Universal Soldier, Timecop, and Street Fighter, gaining fame as an action star and sex symbol.

Van Damme worked with well-known Hong Kong directors John Woo, Tsui Hark, and Ringo Lam between 1993 and 1998 as they entered Western cinema. He also directed The Quest in 1996. Although his popularity dipped in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he made a comeback with the 2008 film JCVD, where he played a fictionalized version of himself to critical acclaim.

He returned to the action scene in The Expendables 2 in 2012, playing the villain opposite Sylvester Stallone. Van Damme has been married to Gladys Portugues twice, with a marriage to Darcy LaPier in between. For his contributions to Belgian culture, he was honored as an Officer of the Order of the Crown. He continues to work in action films and voice acting, remaining a key figure in martial arts cinema.

Before Fame

Growing up in Brussels during the 1960s and 1970s, Van Damme started learning martial arts at age ten, encouraged by his father. His commitment to Shotokan karate, along with intensive bodybuilding, shaped his physical abilities during these years. The European martial arts scene in the late 1970s gave young competitors a chance to gain recognition, and Van Damme seized this opportunity with his championship wins.

The early 1980s were a golden age for action movies, with martial arts films becoming popular in Western markets after Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan's success. Van Damme's move to America in 1982 came at a time when Hollywood was increasingly interested in martial arts performers. However, he spent several years out of the spotlight before landing his breakthrough role in Bloodsport.
