Biography

Zein al-Sharaf bint Jamil was born on 2 August 1916 in Alexandria, Egypt, and became one of the most influential figures in Jordan's modern history. She was Queen of Jordan as the wife of King Talal and is best remembered as the mother of King Hussein, who ruled Jordan for nearly five decades. Her life saw significant changes in the Middle East, from the end of the Ottoman Empire to the formation of modern Arab states and the challenging years that followed.

She married Talal ibn Abdullah, who became King Talal I of Jordan in 1951 after the assassination of his father, King Abdullah I. Her time as queen consort was relatively short due to King Talal's brief reign, but she was at the heart of Jordanian royal and political life during an important time. King Talal's reign ended in 1952 when he abdicated because of illness, with his son Hussein becoming king. Even during King Hussein's long reign, Zein al-Sharaf remained a respected and prominent royal family member.

Besides her role as consort, Zein al-Sharaf was known internationally. In 1965, she received the Order of the Crown of Malaysia, a prestigious honor, showing her diplomatic connections and the respect she held in the Muslim world and elsewhere. She also received the Order of the Defender of the Realm, another notable Malaysian honor, highlighting the high regard in which she was held by other governments and royal families.

Zein al-Sharaf lived a long life and saw Jordan grow from a young kingdom dealing with regional conflicts to a more stable state under King Hussein's leadership. She was known in Jordan for her dignity, dedication to her family, and her impact on raising King Hussein, who often acknowledged her role in shaping his character and views. She remained an important figure in the royal family into the later decades of the twentieth century.

She died on 26 April 1994 in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the age of 77. Her death marked the end of a life closely linked with the founders of the modern Hashemite dynasty. In Jordan, she is remembered as a queen who connected the early, fragile years of the kingdom with its more stable mid-century identity.

Before Fame

Zein al-Sharaf bint Jamil was born in Alexandria in 1916, at a time when the city was a bustling hub in the Eastern Mediterranean, with a mix of Arabs, Turks, Greeks, and Europeans. Back then, Alexandria was influenced by the Ottomans and the British, and its elite had connections with the broader Arab and Islamic world. There's not much widely available information about her early years and family, but her background put her in a cultured environment that eventually connected her with the Hashemite royal family.

She rose to prominence through her marriage into the Jordanian royal family, a new dynasty descended from the Sharif of Mecca. Marriages among families across the Arab world were common in elite political and social networks in the early 20th century, and Zein al-Sharaf's marriage to the future King Talal I placed her firmly within the growing framework of the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan.
