Biography

Kristaps Porziņģis is a Latvian basketball player known as one of Europe's top NBA players. Born on August 2, 1995, in Liepāja, Latvia, Porziņģis is 7 feet 2 inches tall and plays both power forward and center. His mix of size, shooting ability, and ball-handling skills earned him the nickname 'the Unicorn' because he can play both inside and outside as a big man.

Porziņģis started his professional career in 2012 with Sevilla in Spain's Liga ACB. He quickly moved up from the youth team to the main squad by 2013. His rapid progress earned him the EuroCup Basketball Rising Star award in 2015 when he was just 19, making him the youngest to get this award. This achievement led to him entering the 2015 NBA Draft, where he was picked fourth overall by the New York Knicks.

In the NBA, he showed individual talent but also faced changes within teams. While with the New York Knicks from 2015 to 2019, Porziņģis became a key player, making the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2016 and the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. However, disagreements with team management led to his trade to the Dallas Mavericks in 2019. There, injuries and uneven performance limited his success, leading to another trade to the Washington Wizards in 2022.

Porziņģis found new life with the Wizards, showing better health and play before being traded to the Boston Celtics in 2023. His time in Boston was very successful, as he played an important part in the team's 2024 NBA championship win. Despite this, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in 2025, continuing his pattern of frequently changing teams while still being one of the league's most talented big men.

Before Fame

Growing up in Liepāja, a port city on Latvia's Baltic coast, Porziņģis came from a basketball family, with his older brother Jānis also pursuing professional basketball. His exceptional height was evident early on, and he began focusing seriously on basketball during his teenage years. At 17, he made the big decision to leave Latvia for Spain, joining Sevilla's basketball program to develop his skills in a more competitive European league.

The early 2010s saw more European players moving to top-tier leagues, with young prospects looking for better development opportunities outside their home countries. Porziņģis's move to Sevilla was part of this trend, as he opted for professional development over traditional college routes. His quick rise from youth player to senior team contributor within two years showed the fast-track development path that would shape his career.
