Strategic Narrative Overview
Iran responded on 13 April by seizing the Israeli-linked ship MSC Aries and launching a large drone and missile barrage at Israel, which was largely intercepted with allied assistance from the US, UK, France, and Jordan. Israel struck back on 19 April with limited strikes in Iran and Syria. A second Iranian missile attack followed on 1 October 2024, after the assassinations of Hamas leader Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Israel again retaliated on 26 October.
01 / The Origins
The 2024 escalation grew from decades of Iranian–Israeli hostility conducted largely through proxies such as Hezbollah and Hamas. The immediate trigger was Israel's 1 April 2024 airstrike on the Iranian consulate complex in Damascus, killing senior Iranian military officials. This unprecedented attack on a diplomatic facility prompted Iran to abandon its long-standing policy of indirect retaliation and strike Israeli territory directly for the first time.
03 / The Outcome
The 2024 exchanges did not produce a formal ceasefire or resolution; analysts characterized Israel's retaliatory strikes as calibrated to avoid full-scale war. The conflict remained unresolved and escalated further in June 2025 when Israel launched a surprise offensive targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities, initiating what became known as the Iran–Israel Twelve-Day War.
