Strategic Narrative Overview
The first major Russian assault in early 2023 involved massed armour and was repelled with heavy Russian tank losses. Ukrainian commanders described these clashes as the largest tank battle of the war. The Russian commander, Rustam Muradov, was subsequently dismissed. Throughout 2023 and into mid-2024, smaller Russian attempts to advance near Vuhledar also failed. In late August 2024, Russia launched a renewed large-scale offensive, applying simultaneous pressure from the south, west, and east.
01 / The Origins
Vuhledar is a small city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, situated on elevated terrain with strategic value along the southern front of Russia's 2022 invasion. Russian forces advanced through surrounding areas in 2022, setting the stage for a concentrated effort to seize the city. Its capture would threaten Ukrainian supply lines and potentially open avenues toward Zaporizhzhia, making it a significant operational objective.
03 / The Outcome
By late September 2024, Russian forces had near-encircled Vuhledar while actively storming the city. On 1 October 2024, Russian forces captured Vuhledar. The fall of the city ended over two years of Ukrainian resistance and handed Russia a notable territorial gain on the southern Donetsk front, following some of the costliest armoured engagements of the broader invasion.
