Strategic Narrative Overview
US–Israeli airstrikes struck military bases, government buildings, schools, hospitals, and heritage sites across Iran, causing civilian casualties. Iran retaliated with hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles against Israel and US bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, and closed the Strait of Hormuz. Strikes spread to Iraq's Kurdistan, Cyprus, and Azerbaijan. The conflict with Hezbollah escalated into the 2026 Lebanon war, and global oil markets were severely disrupted.
01 / The Origins
Following Iran–Israel missile exchanges in 2024 and the Twelve-Day War of June 2025—which included a US strike on Iranian nuclear sites—tensions escalated further when Iranian security forces massacred thousands of civilians during protests in January 2026. US president Donald Trump threatened military action and ordered the largest US regional military buildup since 2003. On 28 February 2026, the US and Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iran during ongoing nuclear negotiations, killing Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials.
03 / The Outcome
Iran, the US, and Israel agreed to a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan beginning 8 April 2026, though it came under strain as Iran refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump repeatedly claimed victory and threatened further strikes on Iranian infrastructure. The conflict remained ongoing with no formal resolution, significant economic damage across the region, and widespread international condemnation of the initial US–Israeli strikes.
