Strategic Narrative Overview
Israeli forces entered the hospital on 15 November 2023, announcing discovery of weaponry and a Hamas command center. Media outlets including CNN and The Guardian reported that evidence shown during a press tour appeared staged or edited. In December 2023, analysis suggested hospital buildings were not connected to tunnels. A second major raid began on 18 March 2024, following intelligence that senior Hamas officials had regrouped inside. A two-week siege followed, ending 1 April 2024.
01 / The Origins
During the broader Gaza war, Israel alleged that Hamas maintained a command and control center beneath Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical complex. Both Israel and the United States publicly supported this claim. Hospital administration and Hamas denied the allegations, and the hospital director urged international security experts to conduct an independent verification. The siege began on 11 November 2023, when Israeli forces completely encircled the complex, cutting it off from Gaza City.
03 / The Outcome
The siege ended on 1 April 2024, leaving Al-Shifa Hospital mostly destroyed. Hundreds of Palestinian dead were found in and around the complex, including in mass graves. The operation drew sharp international criticism, including from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who called for an independent investigation. The World Health Organization condemned the use of the hospital as a battleground, and Israeli claims of military infrastructure findings were not accepted as conclusive proof.
