Strategic Narrative Overview
Ukrainian Ground Forces mounted sustained resistance against Russian Armed Forces advancing through Kyiv's western suburbs. Fighting in Bucha, alongside neighboring Irpin and Hostomel, formed part of the broader Kyiv offensive. Ukrainian defenders slowed and ultimately halted the Russian advance, preventing the encirclement of the capital. Combat in Bucha continued from late February through the end of March 2022, with Russian forces unable to consolidate control of the area.
01 / The Origins
Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine beginning 24 February 2022, Russian forces advanced on Kyiv from multiple directions. The western suburbs of Kyiv, including Bucha, Irpin, and Hostomel, became critical targets in a broader Russian strategy to encircle and seize the Ukrainian capital. Bucha was identified by the Kyiv Oblast State Administration as one of the most dangerous areas in the region during this phase of the conflict.
03 / The Outcome
Russian forces withdrew from Bucha by 31 March 2022, and Ukrainian forces regained control of the city. Upon re-entering Bucha, Ukrainian authorities and journalists uncovered evidence of widespread killings of civilians by Russian troops, an event that became known as the Bucha massacre. The atrocities provoked widespread international condemnation and intensified calls for war crimes investigations and further military and economic support for Ukraine.
