Strategic Narrative Overview

Fighting in Humera lasted from 9 to 11 November 2020, pitting Ethiopian federal and Amhara regional forces, alongside Eritrean troops, against TPLF-aligned fighters. The battle is notable as the first confirmed instance of Eritrean military engagement in the war. Shelling during the battle caused civilian casualties. Following the city's capture, Ethiopian, Eritrean, and Amhara forces conducted house-to-house searches, detaining residents.

01 / The Origins

The Battle of Humera occurred within the broader context of the Tigray War, which began in November 2020 when the Ethiopian federal government launched a military offensive against the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). The TPLF had long dominated Ethiopian federal politics before being sidelined by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Tensions escalated until open conflict broke out, drawing in Eritrea as an allied party on the Ethiopian government's side.

03 / The Outcome

After the battle, Amhara and Ethiopian forces carried out what became known as the Humera massacre, beating and killing civilians, looting homes, and confining residents in detention camps. Reports indicate that detainees were killed incrementally, with bodies disposed of in the Tekeze River. The city passed under the control of pro-government forces, but the aftermath was marked by severe human rights violations against the local population.
