Strategic Narrative Overview
Following Saleh's announcement, armed clashes erupted between Houthi fighters and forces loyal to Saleh across the capital Sanaa. The Saudi-led coalition seized on the split, intensifying airstrikes against Houthi positions in the city. Street-level combat spread through several neighborhoods as both factions struggled for control of strategic locations, checkpoints, and government buildings in what became several days of intense urban fighting.
01 / The Origins
Ali Abdullah Saleh and the Houthis had cooperated since the 2014–15 Houthi takeover of the Yemeni government, forming a tactical alliance against the internationally recognized government and the Saudi-led coalition. That alliance fractured in late 2017 when Saleh publicly announced a willingness to break ranks with the Houthis and open dialogue with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who had been conducting a military intervention in Yemen since 2015.
03 / The Outcome
The Houthis gained the upper hand in the street battles and killed Ali Abdullah Saleh on 4 December 2017, eliminating the principal challenger to their hold on the capital. His death removed a powerful political counterweight within the anti-coalition camp, leaving the Houthis in firm control of Sanaa and its institutions. Saleh's forces largely disintegrated following his killing, with no significant territorial transfer to the Saudi-led coalition.
