How to read this figure

GDP per capita measures economic output per person, not personal wealth or living standards. It can be substantially inflated where a large share of output is generated by multinational corporations or by cross-border workers who are not counted in the resident population. Ireland's figure, for example, is raised by multinational profit-shifting — its own statistics office reports a modified measure (GNI*) for this reason — and Luxembourg's by commuters who contribute to GDP but live abroad. For comparing living standards, GDP per capita at purchasing power parity (PPP) is more reliable.

Analysis# India GDP per Capita India's GDP per capita reached 3,051.30 USD in 2026, marking the country's all-time peak. This represents a remarkable 1,026.6% increase since 1980, when the metric stood at just 270.85 USD. The sustained growth reflects decades of economic expansion and rising living standards across the nation's expanding middle class. Recent years reveal accelerating momentum. Between 2020 and 2026, GDP per capita surged from 1,907.04 USD to 3,051.30 USD—a 60% jump in six years. The 2020 dip to 1,907.04 USD marked a temporary setback amid global disruptions, but recovery proved swift and robust. Projections through 2030 suggest the upward trajectory will persist, positioning India among the world's fastest-growing major economies in terms of per capita wealth generation.
