The 1969 Formula One season was underway with Jackie Stewart leading the World Championship of Drivers. The Nürburgring's exceptionally long circuit meant the race ran only 14 laps, and organisers again permitted Formula Two cars to enter, though they remained ineligible for championship points.
On 3 August 1969, Belgian driver Jacky Ickx started from pole position and dominated the closing stages of the 14-lap German Grand Prix at Nürburgring, leading the final eight laps and setting the fastest lap to take victory in his works Brabham BT26-Ford ahead of Stewart and Bruce McLaren.
Ickx's victory marked a significant result for Brabham, while Stewart's second-place finish extended his lead in the 1969 World Championship of Drivers, putting him on course for the title. McLaren's third place added further points for the New Zealander in the competitive season.
