Pre-race controversy erupted when organisers limited the grid to sixteen starters, angering FOCA members. Friday qualifying laps were not counted, and although organisers briefly reversed the decision, the Commission Sportive Internationale intervened and enforced the original sixteen-car limit, forcing non-qualifiers off the grid.
The race at Jarama on 19 April 1970 was won by defending world champion Jackie Stewart driving a March 701 entered by the privateer Tyrrell team. A serious accident involving Jackie Oliver and Jacky Ickx saw both cars catch fire; Ickx suffered minor burns when his overalls were soaked in burning fuel. Mario Andretti finished third, and Bruce McLaren scored his final podium.
Stewart's victory proved to be the last win for a privately entered car in Formula One history. Jacky Ickx recovered from his burns in time to compete at Monaco. Bruce McLaren's third-place finish was his last podium and race completion before his death later that year.
