The Mont Tremblant circuit was shut down following a dispute with local racing authorities, leaving Mosport Park as the only available Canadian venue. The track was upgraded to meet contemporary Formula One safety and technical standards before hosting the event.
On 24 September 1972, the Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport Park as round 11 of 12 in the 1972 World Championship of Drivers. Jackie Stewart, starting fifth, won the 80-lap race ahead of Peter Revson and Denny Hulme, both of McLaren.
Stewart's victory contributed to his 1972 season points tally, and Mosport Park was established as the sole permanent host of the Canadian Grand Prix following the closure of Mont Tremblant. McLaren secured a strong double-points finish with second and third places.
