The Monaco circuit was substantially modified from its 1971 layout in the interest of driver safety. The pit lane was relocated to the harbor front between the chicane and Tabac corner, and an additional chicane was inserted near Tabac to reduce speeds through that section.
On May 14, 1972, the Monaco Grand Prix was contested as the fourth round of the 1972 Formula One World Championship. Jean-Pierre Beltoise, driving for BRM, took victory on the revised circuit in a race that also marked the first Formula One win for a Marlboro-sponsored car.
Beltoise's victory proved to be the only World Championship win of his career. It also marked the final Formula One race win for the BRM constructor, ending a competitive era for the British team. The Marlboro sponsorship milestone signaled a growing commercial branding influence in the sport.
