Zandvoort returned to the Formula One calendar in 1973 after a one-year absence during which the circuit underwent extensive safety upgrades, including new asphalt, barriers, and a race control tower, enabling the Dutch Grand Prix to resume on 29 July 1973.
Jackie Stewart won the race for his 26th Formula One victory, surpassing Jim Clark's record of 25 wins and claiming his fourth win of the 1973 season. François Cevert finished second, James Hunt scored his first podium, and Roger Williamson was killed in a crash during the race.
Stewart's record-breaking win cemented his status as the most successful Formula One driver to that point. Roger Williamson's death marked the first of two driver fatalities in the 1973 season; François Cevert, who podiumed at this race, was also killed later that year during practice for the United States Grand Prix.
