Niki Lauda dominated the race from the front, leading every lap in his Ferrari. On lap 67, debris on the circuit caused Lauda's tyre to fail, sending his car into the barriers and ending his race. Jacques Laffite also retired, likely from the same debris, leaving the outcome wide open.
The 1974 Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport Park on 22 September 1974. Lauda's retirement handed the lead to Emerson Fittipaldi, who drove his McLaren to victory. It was also the Formula One debut of young Austrian driver Helmut Koinigg.
Fittipaldi's win, his 12th career victory and McLaren's last of the 1974 season, strengthened his position in the World Championship. Helmut Koinigg, who had made his debut in this race, was killed in the very next round at Watkins Glen.
