Hesketh Racing, a small privateer team, had developed the Hesketh 308 and entered the 1975 Formula One season competing against well-funded factory teams. British driver James Hunt, who had yet to win a Grand Prix, lined up against points leader Niki Lauda driving the formidable Ferrari 312T at Zandvoort.
On 22 June 1975, James Hunt drove the Hesketh 308 to victory in the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort over 75 laps of the four-kilometre circuit. He beat Ferrari's Niki Lauda by just one second, with Lauda's teammate Clay Regazzoni finishing third, marking one of Formula One's most celebrated underdog victories.
The win gave Hesketh Racing the sole Grand Prix victory of its six-year existence and marked Hunt's first Formula One race win. Hunt would go on to claim the 1976 World Championship, while the result demonstrated that a privateer operation could defeat dominant factory teams, cementing its place in Formula One folklore.
