Denver, Colorado was originally awarded the 1976 Winter Olympics but withdrew in 1972 following a public referendum in which Colorado voters rejected public funding for the Games. The International Olympic Committee then needed a replacement host on short notice.
Innsbruck, Austria stepped in as the replacement host city and organized the XII Olympic Winter Games from February 4 to 15, 1976. The city was able to reuse infrastructure from its 1964 Winter Olympics, making the transition feasible within the tight timeframe.
The 1976 Innsbruck Games were successfully completed, and Innsbruck became the first city to host the Winter Olympics on two occasions. Denver's withdrawal prompted the IOC to revise its host-city selection and contingency planning processes for future Games.
