The 1991 Formula One World Championship brought competitors to Imola for the third round of the season. Ayrton Senna, driving for McLaren-Honda, qualified on pole position, setting the stage for a dominant McLaren performance at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
On 28 April 1991, Senna led the 61-lap race from pole to victory, with his McLaren-Honda teammate Gerhard Berger crossing the line second and JJ Lehto taking third place in a Dallara-Judd. The result gave McLaren a commanding 1-2 finish at the San Marino Grand Prix.
The victory reinforced McLaren-Honda's competitiveness in the 1991 championship and represented their first 1-2 result since the 1989 Belgian Grand Prix. It also proved to be Senna's final win at Imola; he died at the same circuit during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
