Nigel Mansell led the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix from pole position in his dominant Williams-Renault and appeared set for victory. On lap 71, suspecting a puncture, he made an unplanned pit stop for new tyres, rejoining the race just behind Ayrton Senna's McLaren-Honda.
The 78-lap race at the Circuit de Monaco saw Mansell close rapidly on Senna in the final laps and pressure him intensely through the narrow streets. Senna, however, held his line throughout and crossed the finish line just 0.2 seconds ahead of Mansell, securing victory.
Senna's win was his fifth at Monaco, equalling the record held by Graham Hill. Riccardo Patrese finished third for Williams, while Michael Schumacher and Martin Brundle took fourth and fifth for Benetton. Mansell's championship lead was reduced due to the lost points.
