Growing international recognition of parasport led to closer ties between the International Paralympic Committee and the IOC. France's hosting of the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics provided an opportunity to co-locate the Winter Paralympics at the nearby resort of Tignes, formalizing IOC cooperation for the first time.
From 25 March to 1 April 1992, the fifth Winter Paralympics were held at Tignes, France, as a support venue to Albertville. The Games marked the first Winter Paralympics on French soil and debuted demonstration events in Alpine and Nordic skiing for athletes with intellectual disabilities and biathlon for visually impaired athletes.
The formal cooperation with the IOC established a precedent for integrating the Paralympics more closely with the Olympic movement. The introduction of demonstration events for athletes with intellectual disabilities and visual impairments expanded the scope of winter parasport and paved the way for broader inclusion in future Games.
