CONMEBOL sought to expand the Copa América format beyond its ten member associations, leading to the first-ever invitation of teams from outside South America. Mexico and the United States, both members of CONCACAF, were selected as the two guest nations to complete the enlarged competition format.
The 1993 Copa América was held in Ecuador from 15 June to 4 July, featuring all ten CONMEBOL members alongside guest sides Mexico and the United States. Argentina advanced through the tournament and defeated Mexico 2–1 in the final, claiming the championship.
Argentina secured their record 14th Copa América title, a senior continental triumph that would not be repeated until 2021. The tournament also entered the record books as the first edition in which neither Brazil nor Uruguay finished in the top four, a feat not repeated until 2015.
