Ireland's victory at Eurovision 1992 with Linda Martin's 'Why Me?' obligated broadcaster RTÉ to host the 1993 contest. Growing interest from post-communist Eastern Bloc countries prompted the EBU to introduce a qualifying round, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to accommodate new participants within the existing format.
The 38th Eurovision Song Contest took place on 15 May 1993 at the Green Glens Arena in Millstreet, Ireland, presented by Fionnuala Sweeney. Twenty-five countries competed, including three first-time participants — Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia — who qualified through the Kvalifikacija za Millstreet preliminary competition.
Ireland won for the second consecutive year with Niamh Kavanagh's 'In Your Eyes', equalling the all-time record of five victories shared with France and Luxembourg. Ireland also joined Israel, Luxembourg, and Spain as countries that had won in back-to-back contests, cementing its dominance in the competition during this era.
