Entering the season finale at Sepang, Ferrari led McLaren in the Constructors' Championship. Mika Häkkinen, McLaren's title contender, started second on the grid alongside pole-sitter Schumacher, but received a ten-second stop-and-go penalty for a jump start, critically hampering McLaren's ability to challenge Ferrari's points lead.
Michael Schumacher led from pole position, trading the lead with teammate Rubens Barrichello during their second pit stops before retaining it. Schumacher held off David Coulthard in the closing laps to win the 56-lap race, with Coulthard second and Barrichello third. Häkkinen recovered to fourth despite his penalty.
Schumacher's victory gave him nine wins for the season, tying records set by Mansell in 1992 and himself in 1995, and equalled Mansell's 108-point tally. McLaren could not overhaul Ferrari's points total, confirming Ferrari as World Constructors' Champions. Coulthard's second place secured him third in the Drivers' Championship ahead of Barrichello. It was also the final race for Pedro Diniz and Johnny Herbert, the latter retiring after 161 starts.
