Michael Schumacher took pole position and led the opening four laps of the 2001 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. A first-lap collision between David Coulthard and Jarno Trulli caused Coulthard to retire on lap three with suspension failure, removing McLaren's second driver from contention.
Häkkinen, starting second, moved into the lead after Schumacher ran wide at Copse corner on lap five. He dominated the 60-lap race, briefly losing the lead to Juan Pablo Montoya during pit stops before reclaiming it. Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello completed the podium for Ferrari.
The result was Häkkinen's first win since the 2000 Belgian Grand Prix and his 19th and last career victory. Schumacher extended his World Drivers' Championship lead to 37 points over Coulthard, and Ferrari stretched their Constructors' Championship advantage over McLaren to 56 points with six rounds remaining.
